2004 NH School Board of Excellence Winner

NHSBA is pleased to announce the Rochester School Board as the recipient of the 2004 New Hampshire School Board of Excellence ("EDies") Award.

The 11-member Rochester Board received their award at the Excellence in Education Awards Banquet on June 5 at the Center of New Hampshire along with all of the 2004 EDies award winners.

The Rochester School Board was selected to receive the 2004 Excellence in Education Award based on their hard work and commitment to creating a collaborative, trusting relationship with their administrative team. As a result, the district has seen improved student performance on standardized tests, more efficient professional development techniques, a new reading program focused on bringing 90 percent of Rochester's third graders to grade-level in reading, and technology improvements that support optimum learning opportunities for children.

The key to their success is that the team of administrators and school board members now better understand each others' roles and perspectives, and everyone's ideas are respected as they go about their business. For many years, the Rochester School Department was characterized by a high degree of mistrust between the school board and school staff. In order to move toward a successful collaborative approach, both the school board and administration modified their approach to working with one another.
